Plants to discover on our Riverside Cottages Nature Trail
Torch Ginger
Your expedition begins with the Torch Ginger, a striking plant renowned for its stunning pink flowers, which are not only visually appealing but also edible. This species, one of the many varieties of ginger, is home to Khao Sok.
Alocasia or Elephant Ear Plants
As you continue to traverse the trail towering Alocasia plants, or elephant ear plants, catch your eye with their majestic leaves, some stretching over a meter in length. Though not typically consumed, these plants offer a visual feast, their intricate inflorescence revealing the complexity of nature’s design. Amidst the foliage, a world of tiny flowers unfolds, each playing a vital role in the plant’s reproductive cycle.
Betel Nut Palm
Within the rich culture of Thailand, the Betel Nut Palm holds a special place, its nuts symbolizing prosperity and tradition. Used in traditional ceremonies and prized for their stimulating properties, these nuts leave an indelible mark on both culture and cuisine. They’re often used in Thailand to mark property boundaries. There are some great examples along the Riverside Cottages Nature Trail.
Kaffir Lime
The aromatic qualities of Kaffir Lime not only permeates the air but its fruits and leaves weave their way into a plethora of Thai culinary traditions. As with so many plants that we find on the Riverside Cottages Nature Trail the Kaffir provides a rich resource for the local people. From culinary delights to aromatic therapies, this versatile plant enriches both body and soul, leaving a fragrant aroma wherever it grows.
Banana Plant
Amidst the tall canopy, banana trees stand as a resilient guard, filling gaps in the forest and nourishing creatures with their fruit. From the succulent fruits to the delicate flowers, every part of the banana tree plays a vital role in the ecosystem, fostering life and abundance in its growth.
Fish-Tailed Palms
Nature’s enigma unfolds in the form of fish-tailed palms. Their towering presence and intricate life cycle offer a glimpse into the wonders of the tropical forest. From their short-lived blooms to the prickly fruits, these palms embody the resilience and complexity of the natural world.
White Backed Palm
Riverside Cottages is also home to a very special species of palm: the White Backed Palm. This rare palm is one of the world’s most endangered palm species. It’s found in Khao Sok and Khao Phra Taew forest park in Phuket, and nowhere else on earth! The tree is small (3-5m) tall, with large fan-shaped leaves with silver-white undersides which emanate from a central thick trunk. Upon a first glance, it may look like some other palms around the resort, but its silvery-white underside sets the White Backed Palm apart from the rest!
